Grapefruit Avocado Oatmeal

Don’t freak out. I know it looks and sounds strange, but…just give it a chance!

It’s verging on a savory oatmeal, but it’s definitely still sweet. It’s inspired by one of my favorite salads, grapefruit segments and avocado slices piled on a heap of spinach. Mmmm. If you’re hankering to try savory oats, but are still too scared to make the jump, this might be a good transition recipe for you. The grapefruit is flavorful, but the avocado is rich and creamy. As long as you like avocado (and I really, really do), you’ll enjoy this.

You just have to get the courage to try it. 🙂

Grapefruit Avocado Oatmeal

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Yield: serves 1

What you'll need:

  • 1/2 a grapefruit
  • 1 cup milk of choice, or water
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (I use Country Choice Organic)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice, or 1/8 tsp lemon extract
  • 1/3 ripe avocado
  • pinch of salt

How to make it:

  1. Prep your grapefruit.
  2. Bring milk (I use 1/2 c original almond milk and 1/2 c water) to a boil, add oats, and reduce heat to medium. (If using chia or flax seeds, add now. I recommend chia.)
  3. Add in your grapefruit segments and stir until they break apart. (I also saved some segments for the topping.)
  4. Once more of the liquid has absorbed, add lemon juice and salt. Stir.
  5. Dice in avocado and fold into oatmeal.
  6. When you're pleased with the consistency of the oatmeal, transfer to a bowl. Add a splash of your milk of choice and any other additional toppings (more avocado, shredded coconut, nuts, etc.). I used pepitas.

I love avocado in oatmeal. I have never paired it with grapefruit before, but I added spinach and lime juice once, and it was fantastic! I feel that peanut butter would also go really well with avocado.

I have always had what i call avocado milkshake oatmeal as an overnight oatmeal recipe. My friend from brazil introduced me to the idea of avocado as a dessert by putting milk avocado and sugar in a blender. Of course i had to put that that into oatmeal lol heres my recipe:
    1/2 cup of oats
1/3 cup of plain greek yogurt
    1/2 avocado
    3 tsp of sugar
    1/2 cup of almond milk
    blood orange segments
    1 tbsp of slivered almonds
blend together avocado, sugar, and almond milk. Add oats, yogurt, avocado mixture, and fruit and nuts into a bowl. Set in the fridge overnight, and enjoy in the morning!

Hmm I really want to try this! I’m wondering when you put the grapefruit in? Did I miss when you said it? In the picture it looks like its on top, but did you stir some in near the beginning as well? Thanks!

I started eating savory oatmeal when I went on a candida diet, meaning no sugars of any kind and no substitutes either. I would put in diced onion or garlic, Italian seasonings while it was cooking and then add nutritional yeast when it was done. Helped me get through the diet. I still do this often because I love it so.
