Sweet Corn, Blueberry, and Basil Oatmeal

The best part about Manhattan can be summed up in one word: access. In this city, you can basically track down anything..with relatively little effort (as long as you’ve mastered the public transportation piece). Certainly, I could access most things from Brooklyn, but it was always such a drag. I used to make excuses about how inconvenient or tedious it would be, and I would just stay home. In my new location, it’s so easy!Farmer’s market. No excuses.

What is it about farmer’s markets that is so incredible?! Maybe it’s because there are so many unique items (love the habanero jam I bought from Beth’s Family Kitchen). Maybe it’s because there are free samples. Maybe it’s because everything is so stinkin’ fresh. :

I found these beautiful blueberries (I bought two of ’em!)…

…and I built up my herb garden.

I haven’t had an herb garden in two years, but I finally have it back. At the moment, I have basil, thyme, rosemary, and cilantro. I’m thinking of adding mint to my collection, but I’ll wait a bit on that one. 🙂

Anyway, to use some of my ingredients, I tried out Oatgasm’s Sweet Corn and Blueberry Oatmeal. All I did was add basil, so I’m going to send you over to HER blog. Make the recipe as she describes, and then chiffonade about 5-8 basil leaves. Stir half into the oatmeal (just before serving) and use the rest as topping. It’s divine.

Something I believe in quite strongly is giving credit where it’s due. Sadly, I have seen my recipes appear all over the internet and displayed as if it were created by the poster. This breaks my heart, and that’s the lowest thing you can do.

Beyond giving credit, I prefer to link directly to the original author’s post. By doing so, I am giving traffic to Meghan’s (the author of Oatgasm) post. She did all the work here; I just added basil! Please follow my example. Do not post others’ recipes on your own blogs, on social media (particularly Instagram), etc. Just kindly direct people to the original blog post where the recipe appeared.

I am sure someone will wonder this, so I’ll address it now: it’s typically okay to post a recipe that you adapted. However, this was such a unique recipe that I wanted to ensure Meghan received the credit she deserves for it. I hope you enjoy the addition of basil, though. 😉 It’s my favorite herb!

I know all too well what it’s like to have recipes stolen right from your kitchen, so I truly appreciate the recognition (and the little bit of extra traffic doesn’t hurt 😉 ). I never even thought of using fresh basil in this, but will definitely try it next time I have the ingredients on hand.

    I completely agree with you that copying ideas is way too common in the food blog world. We’ve gotta give some credit to everyone’s hard work!! As for this recipe, I am willing to bet that both yours and Meghan’s recipes are lovely. It seems out of the box, but I actually really enjoy corn in my oatmeal!
