Snickers Salad Oatmeal

If you do not reign from the Midwest region of the United States, you will be baffled by the name of this oatmeal. You will be even more confused as you look at the ingredients. Of course, the recipe for Snickers Salad has recently popped up around Pinterest, but for the most part, this piece of classic Midwestern cuisine is foreign to everyone in the remaining 45 states.

Let me break this down for you: Snickers Salad consists of chopped apples, chopped Snickers bars, mini marshmallows, and Cool Whip. Yes, you read that correctly. Take a second; read it again. Yep.

That’s Snickers Salad.

Now, I’ll be honest, I’m not entirely proud of this piece of my culture. It’s kind of an embarrassing display of just how absurd Midwestern cuisine can be (don’t even get me started on tater tot hot dish casserole). So, to make this into oatmeal, I did my very best to de-garbage it. I did not include marshmallows, as I did not find them integral to the “salad,” but you could add them if you want. Let’s be honest, marshmallows aren’t that different than chocolate chips! However, I had to draw the line somewhere. 🙂 Especially since I cannot afford vegan marshmallows.

Snickers Salad Oatmeal

Prep Time: 2 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Yield: serves 1

What you'll need:

  • 1 cup milk of choice, or water
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (I use Country Choice Organic)
  • 1 small apple
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt (I used Amande almond yogurt)
  • handful of peanuts, broken up if possible
  • handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips

How to make it:

  1. Bring milk (I use 1/2 c original almond milk and 1/2 c water) to a boil, add oats, and reduce heat to medium.
  2. Dice apple and add to oatmeal immediately. Stir occasionally.
  3. Once more of the liquid has absorbed, add vanilla extract and salt. Stir.
  4. Turn off heat once most of the liquid has absorbed. Stir in yogurt and add peanuts. If you'd like to add any extra ingredients (marshmallows, for example), do so now.
  5. Transfer to a bowl and top with chocolate chips, or even some extra nuts.
