Nairn’s Gluten-Free Snacks [Review]

Hello again!

Today I’m sharing with you a gluten-free snack brand called Nairn’s. This Scottish oat-loving company describes its products as a “versatile range of oatcakes, oat biscuits, oaty bakes and gluten free products which do not contain any artificial colourings, flavours or preservatives.” Of COURSE a snack brand dedicated to oats comes from Scotland. Where else? 🙂

In addition to being gluten-free, many of the products are also vegan, so I was able to try them myself!

My favorite thing about these treats is how they are NOT excessively sweet (compared to most American snacks). When I took a bite of the graham crackers, for example, I didn’t get a hit of cloying sweetness or flavors that many American crackers or cookies have.

The texture is what you would expect from a snack made from oats. If you’re familiar with the chewiness of oat flour, you know what I mean. That means it doesn’t “snap” quite like wheat flour does, but it also means it treats your digestive system more nicely. 🙂 Think of an oatmeal cookie versus a regular peanut butter cookie, and you’ll better understand the texture of these crackers!

I enjoyed making little PB&J sandwiches with the graham crackers, like a healthier version of those ridiculous snacks served in some schools. I also dipped them into hot chocolate like biscotti. 😛  I’m eager to make another s’mores-like oatmeal recipe using these!

I packed the regular crackers for a mid-work-day snack along with some dried banana chips. Those crackers are similar to the wh0le wheat version of Ritz crackers, with less salt, so they are very versatile as well. They can jive with savory things like hummus or sweeter things like my beloved coconut-pecan butter (yep, I made sandwiches with that, too).

Because the base of the products are low in sugar, the oatmeal-raisin and ginger cookies were great because those little extra bits added great flavor. I don’t have kids, but if I did, I would rather give them these than other cookie-like products on the market in the U.S.!
