Applesauce Ancient Grains Oatmeal with Almond Butter and Cherry Jam

After falling in love with Purely Elizabeth’s 6-Grain Ancient Grain Cereal, I decided to work with it again, this time with two special ingredients. 1) almond butter, which costs an arm and a leg, and 2) cherry jam, which my friend bought me from Italy. 🙂

The title says applesauce, but you could also use stewed apples, grated apples, or diced apples–whatever floats your yacht.

Speaking of whatever floats your yacht, I had a terrible time deciding between pecan butter or almond butter. I ended up going with almond better because it’s 1) cheaper, and 2) more accessible to most people. However, if you’re a pecan butter fan, go for it! Remember, you can make your own pecan butter and save a few dollars (link is for coconut-pecan butter, but you follow the same process, just without the coconut).

As for the ancient grain oatmeal, I am obviously aware that not everyone has this, can afford it, and/or has access to it. You can make this with any oatmeal. If you want to replicate the 6-grain experience (which is truly remarkable), cook a mix of whatever grains you have: oats, quinoa, flax, chia, buckwheat, etc. You can see how I made an oat-quinoa hybrid porridge here.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Yield: serves 1

What you'll need:

  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • 1/2 cup water (or more milk)
  • 1/3 cup Purely Elizabeth 6-grain Ancient Grain Cereal*
  • 1/2 cup homemade applesauce**
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (if you add cinnamon to your applesauce, you might not need as much)
  • pinch of salt
  • almond butter, for topping***
  • cherry jam, for topping

How to make it:

  1. Add milk and water to a saucepan over medium high heat.
  2. (If not using applesauce but instead dicing or grating your apples, prepare these now while waiting for liquid to come to a boil.)
  3. Once liquid comes to a low boil, add oats and reduce heat to medium or medium low. (If using diced apple, add now so they have plenty of time to soften. Otherwise, do not add apple yet.)
  4. Stir occasionally and let the oatmeal cook for about fifteen minutes.
  5. Once more of the liquid has absorbed, add applesauce, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Continue stirring occasionally.
  6. When you're pleased with the consistency of the oatmeal, transfer to a bowl. Swirl in cherry jam and top with almond butter. Add a splash of your milk of choice and any other additional toppings (sliced almonds, coconut, fruit, dried fruit, more apple, etc.).

Just an FYI:

*If you do not have this cereal, you can make this with steel-cut oats. Use 1/4 cup oats and 1 cup liquid (instead of 1 and 1/2 cups). If you want to imitate the multigrain experience, use a mix of whatever grains you have, or add chia, flax, and/or hemp seeds to your oats.
**You can use store-bought applesauce, stewed apples, diced apples, or grated apple. Depending on the size of your apple, one apple or 1/2 the apple should be sufficient. Apples should be added after 15 minutes of cooking, EXCEPT diced apples. Add those the same time you add the oats.
***Try subbing pecan butter for the almond butter for an easy variation.
